Overview

Upper Mustang Trekking, often called the “Last Forbidden Kingdom,” is one of Nepal’s most unique and culturally rich trekking experiences. Located in the remote northern part of the country, Upper Mustang remains largely untouched by modern tourism, preserving a landscape and culture reminiscent of ancient Tibet. This region was restricted for foreigners until 1992, which has helped maintain its traditional lifestyle, ancient monasteries, and historic walled city of Lo Manthang. Trekking in Upper Mustang is a journey through stark, high-altitude desert terrain with dramatic cliffs, deep gorges, and arid valleys, providing breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The trail connects ancient villages, monasteries, and chortens, allowing trekkers to witness the spiritual and everyday life of the local people.

The trek usually starts with a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, followed by an adventure into Kagbeni and beyond, reaching the medieval capital of Lo Manthang. Each stop along the trail, such as Tsehile, Syangmoche, Tsarang, and Chhusang, offers opportunities to experience local hospitality, traditional mud-brick houses, and intricate Buddhist art in monasteries. Trekkers are immersed in the unique Tibetan-influenced culture, complete with prayer flags fluttering against the dramatic backdrop of barren mountains. Upper Mustang Trekking combines natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural immersion, making it an unforgettable journey for adventurous travelers.

  • Explore the walled city of Lo Manthang with ancient monasteries and a royal palace.
  • Trek through arid desert landscapes and high-altitude valleys.
  • Witness Tibetan Buddhist culture and centuries-old traditions.
  • Experience remote villages such as Kagbeni, Tsarang, and Syangmoche.
  • Enjoy panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Best Season for Upper Mustang Trekking

Choosing the right season is crucial for a safe and enjoyable Upper Mustang Trek. The region experiences a high-altitude desert climate, which means temperatures fluctuate dramatically between day and night. The best trekking seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the skies are mostly clear, providing spectacular views of the mountains, and the weather remains stable with minimal rainfall. Spring offers blooming alpine flowers and lush greenery in the lower valleys, while autumn is known for crisp, clear air and vibrant skies.

Winter months (December to February) are less recommended due to extremely cold temperatures, strong winds, and the possibility of snow, especially at higher elevations like Syangmoche and Lo Manthang. Summer (June to August) coincides with the monsoon, which brings heavy rainfall to most parts of Nepal. However, Upper Mustang, being in a rain shadow area, still receives less rain than other regions, though landslides and road disruptions can occur. Planning your trek during the recommended seasons ensures a balance of favorable weather, visibility, and overall trekking comfort, especially since high-altitude desert landscapes can be harsh and unpredictable.

Best Season Highlights:

  • Spring (March–May): Pleasant temperatures, blooming flowers, and lively villages.
  • Autumn (September–November): Clear skies, perfect mountain views, and stable weather.
  • Avoid Winter (Dec–Feb): Extreme cold and possible snow hazards.
  • Avoid Monsoon (Jun–Aug): Rainfall risk and trail disruptions.
  • Optimal trekking experience with minimal weather-related challenges.

Upper Mustang Trekking Difficulty and Transportation

Upper Mustang Trekking is considered moderate to challenging, primarily due to high-altitude exposure and the remote, rugged terrain. Daily trekking distances range from 5 to 8 hours, covering altitudes between 2,700m in Jomsom and 3,850m in Lo Manthang. While the trails are not technically difficult, altitude sickness is a concern, so acclimatization is essential. Trekkers should have a basic fitness level, stamina, and prior experience with high-altitude hiking. Trekking poles, layered clothing, and proper hydration are recommended to navigate the dry, windy trails and rocky paths.

Transportation to the starting point usually involves a domestic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, which saves significant time and avoids long, winding road journeys. From Jomsom, the trek continues on foot through traditional villages like Kagbeni, Chhusang, and Tsarang. Helicopter services are occasionally available for emergencies or sightseeing, but regular trekking follows well-marked trails that provide access to local teahouses and lodges.

Difficulty and Transportation Summary:

  • Moderate to challenging trek with daily 5–8 hours of walking.
  • Altitudes range from 2,700m (Jomsom) to 3,850m (Lo Manthang).
  • Fitness and acclimatization are crucial.
  • Pokhara–Jomsom flight reduces travel time and avoids rough roads.
  • Well-marked trails through villages, monasteries, and scenic desert landscapes.
  • Helicopter options available for emergencies or sightseeing.

Food and Accommodation for Upper Mustang Trekking

Food and accommodation along the Upper Mustang Trek are generally basic but comfortable, designed to provide trekkers with warmth and local flavor. Most villages have tea houses or lodges offering simple rooms with beds, blankets, and shared bathrooms. Accommodation standards are modest, as the region remains remote, but Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition ensures you stay at the best available lodges along the route. Some places may not have hot showers due to limited water and fuel sources, so trekkers should be prepared for basic amenities.

Food on the trek is a mix of Nepali, Tibetan, and Western cuisine, including staples like dal bhat (lentil soup with rice), noodles, soups, and momos (dumplings). Due to the altitude and limited resources, meals may take longer to prepare, and prices are slightly higher than in Kathmandu or Pokhara. Trekkers are advised to carry snacks, energy bars, and hydration packs. Drinking water should always be purified or boiled, as sources may be untreated. Staying well-fed and hydrated is essential for coping with high-altitude conditions and maintaining energy throughout the trek.

Food and Accommodation Highlights:

  • Tea houses and lodges with basic but comfortable rooms.
  • Simple bedding; hot showers may be limited.
  • Local Nepali and Tibetan dishes: dal bhat, noodles, momos, soups.
  • Availability of Western meals in some lodges.
  • Snacks, energy bars, and purified water are recommended.
  • Friendly hospitality and cultural immersion in villages.

Upper Mustang Trekking Permits

Upper Mustang is a restricted region, and trekkers require a special permit to enter. This permit is part of the Nepalese government’s effort to protect the region’s unique culture and fragile environment. The Restricted Area Permit (RAP) must be obtained before the trek, and the process is usually facilitated by trekking companies like Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition. Permits include strict rules on staying in authorized villages and limiting the number of trekkers per season.

In addition to the RAP, international trekkers must also secure a TIMS card (Trekkers’ Information Management System), which ensures safety and tracking of trekkers. Permit fees can be significant, and the cost varies depending on nationality and group size. Because Upper Mustang is sensitive culturally and environmentally, it’s crucial to respect local regulations, avoid littering, and seek guidance from local authorities. Trekking with a reputable company ensures that all permits are obtained in advance, allowing trekkers to enjoy a hassle-free journey while contributing to the conservation of this historic region.

Permit Details:

  • Restricted Area Permit (RAP) required for Upper Mustang.
  • Trekkers also need a TIMS card.
  • Permit fees vary based on nationality and group size.
  • Trekking companies facilitate permit processing.
  • Strict rules on staying in authorized villages and environmental protection.
  • Essential for cultural preservation and responsible trekking.

Overnight at the hotel in Kathmandu.

Traveler’s Note: Today offers a rich immersion into Nepalese religion, history, and architecture, giving insight into both Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

After breakfast and hotel check-out, we drive approximately six hours to Pokhara, enjoying scenic views of terraced fields, rivers, and mountains along the way. Stop for lunch at a riverside restaurant and stretch your legs amidst natural surroundings. Upon arrival in Pokhara, check into your hotel and spend the evening exploring Phewa Lake, strolling along its lakeside restaurants and cafes, or enjoying a boat ride. Overnight stay at your hotel in Pokhara.

Traveler’s Note: Pokhara is the gateway to the Annapurna region and offers stunning views of Machhapuchhare (Fishtail) and Annapurna ranges. The lakeside is lively in the evening with music, local food, and handicrafts.

After breakfast, we take a short domestic flight to Jomsom, offering breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Nilgiri mountains. Upon arrival, we have a final trek briefing before setting off along the Kaligandaki River. Trek through apple orchards and small villages, finally reaching Kagbeni, a historic town at the entrance of Upper Mustang. Dinner and overnight stay are arranged at a local guesthouse.

Traveler’s Note: Kagbeni is famous for its apple orchards and traditional architecture. From here, you can explore Muktinath Temple if time permits, making it a culturally rich starting point for the trek.

After breakfast, we continue our trek along the Kaligandaki River, passing through the traditional villages of Tangbe and Chhusang. Cross a river and climb steeply for about 30–40 minutes to reach Tsehile. Enjoy the serene landscapes, stone houses, and terraced fields along the way. Dinner and overnight stay at a local guesthouse.

Traveler’s Note: Today’s trek involves gentle walking along the riverbanks and a short steep ascent, giving trekkers a chance to adjust to the altitude while enjoying panoramic views of the Mustang region.

Following breakfast, we trek toward Syangmoche, crossing multiple mountain passes including Taklam La (3240m), Yemdo La (4000m), and Dzong La (3550m). Pass through charming villages like Samar, Bhona, and Yemdo, experiencing the rich local culture and unique architecture. Upon arrival in Syangmoche, rest and enjoy dinner at the guesthouse.

Traveler’s Note: Crossing high passes today offers expansive views of rugged landscapes and Mustang’s dramatic valleys. Prepare for a challenging but rewarding day as the altitude gradually increases.

After breakfast, we set out for Tsarang, crossing four mountain passes: Ghemi La (3520m), Syangmoche La (3850m), Nya La (4050m), and Tsarang La (3920m). The trail is dotted with traditional chhortens and stupas, reflecting the spiritual heritage of Mustang. We enter Tsarang through the grand chhorten gate and check in at our guesthouse for dinner and overnight stay.

Traveler’s Note: Tsarang is a larger village housing approximately 50 families. The Tsarang Monastery perched above the village is a highlight, providing spiritual insights and stunning views of the valley.

After breakfast, enjoy a half-day trek along sandy and rocky trails. In the distance, the fortified settlement of Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang, comes into view. Continue walking through dramatic landscapes until reaching the walled city. Dinner and overnight stay are arranged at a local guesthouse.

Traveler’s Note: Lo Manthang’s 300-meter-long stone walls have historically protected it from harsh winds and invaders. This ancient town houses over a thousand residents and is rich in culture, monasteries, and narrow stone lanes.

After breakfast, spend the day exploring Lo Manthang. Visit the old king’s palace, monasteries, and traditional villages, discovering the unique culture, customs, and lifestyles of the Mustang people. Explore the ancient caves and stop by the herbal medicine school to learn about local medicinal practices. Dinner and overnight stay are arranged at the guesthouse.

Traveler’s Note: Lo Manthang is famous for the Tiji Festival held in May. Its ancient caves and monasteries showcase centuries of history, making it a cultural treasure.

After breakfast, we retrace our steps from Lo Manthang back to Tsarang. The downhill journey is easier than the ascent and provides a new perspective of the trails and landscapes we previously crossed. Upon arrival in Tsarang, rest at the guesthouse, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the next day of trekking.

Traveler’s Note: Walking downhill allows for a relaxed pace and better appreciation of Mustang’s dramatic scenery, with fewer physical demands than the initial ascent.

After breakfast, continue descending back to Syangmoche, retracing the route over the mountain passes we crossed earlier. Trek through valleys filled with juniper trees and follow the riverside trails to reach Syangmoche. Enjoy a well-deserved dinner and overnight stay at the guesthouse.

Traveler’s Note: Today offers an immersive experience of Mustang’s natural beauty, passing through rugged terrain, rivers, and small villages that reveal traditional lifestyles.

Following breakfast, descend toward Chhusang, crossing the Kaligandaki River and following its banks through valleys and terraces. The trek today covers 6–7 hours, with a significant drop in altitude, making it easier on the body while offering breathtaking scenery. Dinner and overnight stay at a local guesthouse.

Traveler’s Note: Today’s route is longer but less strenuous, giving trekkers a chance to enjoy the dramatic cliffs and villages of Mustang’s lower valleys.

After breakfast, trek along the Kaligandaki River, moving back toward Kagbeni. Although the trail is the same as earlier, the reverse perspective offers new viewpoints of cliffs, fields, and villages. Check into the guesthouse in Kagbeni for dinner and overnight stay.

Traveler’s Note: The descending trail offers a refreshing change in scenery, as the sun illuminates cliffs and villages differently than during the ascent.

After breakfast, trek through lush apple orchards and follow the Kaligandaki River toward Jomsom. The final day of trekking provides a sense of accomplishment as we approach Jomsom. Dinner and overnight stay are arranged at a guesthouse in Jomsom.

Traveler’s Note: This is the last trekking day, so enjoy every moment of the stunning landscapes and peaceful river valleys as you complete the Upper Mustang adventure.

After breakfast, transfer to Jomsom Airport for a short morning flight to Pokhara. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and relax. The rest of the day is free to explore Pokhara’s lakeside, enjoy boat rides, or simply unwind at a café. Overnight stay at the hotel in Pokhara.

Traveler’s Note: Flights operate early in the morning due to afternoon winds. Pokhara offers a tranquil place to relax after the challenging trek.

After breakfast, check out and drive back to Kathmandu by tourist bus or private vehicle. Enjoy scenic views along the way, with a lunch stop at a riverside restaurant. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, transfer to your hotel for overnight stay.

Traveler’s Note: The drive takes approximately 6–7 hours and offers scenic glimpses of rivers, valleys, and mountains, giving trekkers time to reflect on their adventure.

After breakfast, check out from the hotel and transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport at least three hours before your departure. Our team from Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition will bid you farewell, ensuring a smooth departure. We hope you enjoyed the incredible Upper Mustang Trek and look forward to welcoming you on your next adventure.

Nepal Trekking with Dal Bhat POWER

Amazing trip! Sanjib picked us up from the airport and have everything secured for us until we began our journey with Niraj (Nir) to Lo Manthang, Upper Mustang. Nir was an awesome guide as our group were first-time trekkers. He carried fruit for us the whole way, preparing a plate each night for us to snack on. The views along the way were unimaginable. As we got to our final destination in Upper Mustang, we were exhausted from the altitude, and Nir coordinated a jeep to transport us back to Jomsom. Both Nir and Sanjib always seemed to be looking out for us, and excited for us to have a successful trip. Food was great, the teahouses were comfortable, and the conversations with people we met along the way were the highlight of the trip! The only negative I have is that we were unable to go see the border. It said on our itinerary that we would be able to take a pony ride to the Tibetan border with Nepal, but when it came time, some laws had changed and we were unable to visit. *SUGGESTIONS: bring a face covering for the dust, and extra cash for water/snacks/and other drinks at the tea houses

Upper Mustang 14 Days Trekking Trip

Such a nice trip! Sanjib was the guide we had contact 7 years ago when we first time had plan for this trip, but life keep changing, till this year, we finally can make it. And thanks God Sanjib is always in this area and customized this trip based on our discussion, depend on our request and his options as expert. in 14 days, we had mostly on trekking, 1 day on horse ride, 2 days on jeep transfer. Everything works perfect from the planning to pickup to trekking, and best option for lodging and food and facility. Unbelievable, we even had flashing toilet almost every day, and hot shower! We got very good treatment and being take care of well on the entire trip. And we even had fruit and veg everyday as we requested in such a high/remote mountain area. Our porters are also very good and nice. In a day we have to separate into small groups in different pace, our porter even watched us and make sure we're on the right way and no hurt. Even they don't speak English, but they're so friendly, warm and nice, always having smile and bring the sunshine to us, and took care of us as much as possible. I would like to say thanks to our lovely guide Sanjib and all of our porters. Higher recommended and Thank you so much!

Incredible adventure

Nepal was a way for me to physically surpass myself through a trek. I contacted this agency and the exchanges were quick and perfect. The day of departure Jiban picked me up at the accommodation where I was and we left by taxi at the start of this trek. I did a 9-day trek that I recommend! I was able to climb up to Poon Hill and continue afterwards on Mustang. The scenery was beautiful and I was able to go from jungle to desert! Having come to the monsoon season it is not a tourist season, so I was alone with Jiban. He was a tremendous kindness to me! Always in a good mood and motivated he can only transmit his joie de vivre. It is true that I am a little long downhill and yet I have never felt judged. He told me to take my time, safety first! Between discussions, card games and walking I had a great time thanks to him! I can only advise you for a trek. Jiban knows the landscapes around him, he will explain a lot about the country and adapt to your desires! Nothing is frozen and that is the beauty of this trek! Thanks again to him!!
