The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of Nepal’s most popular and accessible treks, located in the scenic Annapurna region. This trek offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and adventure, making it ideal for first-time trekkers or travelers with limited time. The trail begins at Nayapul, a short drive from Pokhara, and winds through lush forests, terraced fields, and traditional villages such as Tikhedhunga, Ulleri, Ghorepani, Tadapani, and Ghandruk. Each stop provides unique experiences, from interacting with local Gurung and Magar communities to witnessing the tranquil mountain landscapes.
The highlight of this trek is the early morning hike to Poon Hill (3,210m), where trekkers can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of some of the world’s most iconic peaks, including Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Dhaulagiri, and Hiunchuli. The sunrise from Poon Hill is renowned for its vibrant hues reflecting off the snow-capped mountains, creating a memory that lasts a lifetime. The trek generally takes 4–5 days to complete, depending on pace and itinerary, making it a perfect choice for travelers who want an enriching Himalayan experience without committing to a long expedition.
The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek can be undertaken year-round, but the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons are widely regarded as the best times. During spring, rhododendron forests along the trail are in full bloom, adding a riot of colors to your trek. The weather during this period is moderate, and skies are typically clear, offering unobstructed views of the Annapurna range. Autumn, on the other hand, brings crisp air and stable weather, making it ideal for photography and panoramic vistas.
Winter (December to February) is less crowded and offers serene landscapes, though temperatures drop significantly, especially at higher elevations. Monsoon season (June to August) is generally not recommended due to heavy rainfall, landslides, and slippery trails, although the region becomes lush and green. Choosing the right season is crucial to fully enjoy the scenic beauty, cultural experiences, and comfortable trekking conditions that Ghorepani Poon Hill has to offer.
Key points:
The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is considered a moderate trek, suitable for beginners and intermediate trekkers. The trail features gradual ascents and descents, with a few steep sections, especially from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri, which involves climbing over 3,000 stone steps. Overall, the trek is manageable for individuals with average fitness levels, though preparation with cardiovascular exercises and short hikes before arrival is recommended. The highest point, Poon Hill, reaches 3,210 meters, which is generally safe from severe altitude sickness, but acclimatization and proper hydration are still important.
Transportation for the trek is convenient. Most itineraries begin with a drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (6–7 hours by tourist bus), followed by a 1–2 hour drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, the trekking starting point. For return, trekkers can walk back to Nayapul from Ghandruk and take the bus back to Pokhara, before returning to Kathmandu. This combination of road travel and trekking allows a seamless and comfortable journey for travelers who want to explore the Annapurna region efficiently.
Key points:
Along the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, accommodation is primarily in teahouses, which are small lodges run by local families. Teahouses provide basic amenities such as a bed, blanket, and hot shower (often for a small extra fee). While not luxurious, these lodges offer a warm and welcoming environment, allowing trekkers to experience local hospitality and interact with villagers.
Food on the trek is simple but satisfying, with menus featuring local Nepali dishes such as dal bhat (lentil soup with rice), momo (dumplings), noodles, and soups. Most teahouses also offer Western meals such as pasta, omelets, and sandwiches. It’s advisable to carry some snacks and water purification tablets to ensure comfort during the trek. Overall, the food and accommodation options strike a balance between comfort and authenticity, making the trek accessible for all types of travelers.
Key points:
Trekking in the Annapurna region requires two main permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. The ACAP permit helps protect the environment and wildlife of the Annapurna Conservation Area, while the TIMS card is used to monitor trekkers’ safety and maintain records. Both permits can be obtained in Kathmandu or Pokhara, and your trekking company, Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition, can assist with all the necessary paperwork to make the process smooth and hassle-free.
These permits are mandatory for anyone trekking in the Annapurna region, and carrying them throughout the trek is essential as they may be checked by park officials or local authorities. Ensuring valid permits not only complies with regulations but also contributes to conservation efforts that protect Nepal’s natural beauty and cultural heritage for future travelers.

Sanjib and his team truly are the best tour guide I ever met. Not only he was very communicative, but he also goes extra miles in providing his service. On the day we arrived, he helped us to rent all the equipment we need for the trekking. He also quick in helping us during the trekking and patiently guide our team who are not used to trekking. His team are super friendly, passionate and giving such a best service during their work. Seriously recommended and trustworthy. Our trip to Ghorepani poon hill has been such an incredible journey thanks to him and his team.
Will choose Nepal Planet Treks and Expeditions again if we were to go back to Nepal for a trekking trip. Sanjib entertained all our queries promptly while we were planning our trip. Our trekking guide was RL Magar. He is a friendly chap who encouraged us to ask questions along the way. He never failed to assure us of our safety or lend a helping hand. Beyond that, he always went out of his way to navigate any difficulties we faced as first-time trekkers. He and our porter, kumar, made our trip an outstanding one. Thank you!
The trek to Poon Hill is one of the a good and absolutely amazing trip in Nepal! We had always wanted to do this trip but weren’t knowledgeable at all about the process. Just a quick email to Nepal planet treks and the trip was booked, everything taken care of for us begging till end of the treks. Poon Hill trekking is so common to the travelers that stone stages are well developed; guesthouses and citizen houses form villages at several places over the hill, just like everyday checkpoints for the trekkers. Still, hiring a tour guide is a good choice; he can sometimes share some baggage load, assure for the right route and guarantee the safety of the whole group. The views were amazing from poon hill and Raj could answer any questions we had. I highly recommend Nepal planet treks in Nepal and if you do use them ask for Raj!

Thank u to our guide NJ and also Santah ( porter) to make our trip to Poonhill happen. We appreciate their patience. Overall are excellence! Both of u are great!
It was my first trek and visit in Nepal. Our guide Mr Adhikari took great care of me and my friend right from receiving us and welcoming us on airport till last day dropping us at airport. They did nice arrangements for our stay in hotel and tea houses. During trekking our guide took great care and we enjoyed delicious mountain food and even our stay. Big thanks to our guide and porter. They made it easy and memorable trip.

I return safely from the Ghorepani trek after an awe inspiring, exhilarating, life affirming experience, with the Nepal Planet Treks and Expedition team. From my first email to Sanjib (managing director) months before the trek to the last goodbye, I received the most professional & personal attention from Sanjib himself and his team. This trek was a lifetime dream and I wanted it to be customised for me as a solo trekker. Sanjib exceeded my expectations and provided me an excellent guide in Resham and porter Jeevan. He personally attended to every aspect of this trek to make sure everything went smoothly. The team showed patience and support & good humour. They consulted with me every step of the way, showed me great respect, and gently encouraged me when needed. What really makes a difference is that Sanjib started off as a porter, then after about 4 years did his training to obtain his guide certification whilst teaching himself English. After 5 years of guiding, he became managing director of NPTE. Resham also started as a porter, then after about 4 years obtained his guide certification. Thank you Sanjib, Resham & Jeevan for an experience of a lifetime. I highly recommend NPTE.
It was unforgettable experience! It was 7 days trip solo. Really really safe for female solo traveler. Everything perfectly arranged. My guide Sanjib Adhikari was very caring, nice and polite and took care of everything daily so that I could enjoy the trek. It was a pleasure to start every new morning seeing him smile and have fun together. On the way, he was very attentive and considerate so that was always felt safe. The bonus for me is that I managed to build a real relationship with Sanjib. Thank you Sanjib for making my trek enjoyable. Thanks to Sanjib’s brother Niranjan Adhikari, who answered all my emails promptly and competently. And I met wonderful person Sherpa Lale. Lale was ready to help in all situations. Beautiful early sunrise view from Ghandruk and Tolkha ,Dhampus and close view of Annapurna south just breathtaking. During my trekking the weather was clear and sunny. I loved this trek so much. I will come next year to trek another adventure in Nepal . Many thanks to Sanjib. See you soon Sanjib.
I did a 5-day trek because I didn't have much time and I wanted to do this activity but I also wanted to visit other cities in Nepal... the trekking was exceptional... the guest houses where we stayed to sleep, the people I met in the guest houses... It was a super adventure…my NJ guide was super available and very funny. It was a great few days…and the places we saw were amazing to take your breath away. fantastic experience
The trip was amazing. The tour guide Sanjib and porters was very polite and helpful. Was a life experience journey
We had a very great trip with Nepal Planet Treks and our guides Bishnu and porter Raz. We were able to make a custom itinerary beforehand, adapted to our 9 available days for trekking, by combining Poon Hill and Mardi Himal Base Camp. Nevertheless, due to a landslide, we had to adapt the route after day 2, resulting in a completely different set of overnight stays. Bishnu was always very flexible in adapting the route on our needs and wishes, and even adapted it a second time when we arrived quite early in Landruk so we went on to the next guesthouse. We always felt like our wishes and needs were top priority for Bishnu, as we never felt pushed or rushed and could always take our time to rest or take pictures. Sometimes the communication in English was a bit difficult if we had detailed questions - but all in all we totally recommend the company and Bishnu as a guide. We were not really lucky with the weather as this year monsoon extended until mid of October where we finished our trip (they said the monsoon is probably delayed by climate change), but in the morning we often had amazing views of the mountains.
The company and the guide were super professional! They made my trek really amazing. My guide fixed everything and took really good care of me during the trek. Would really recommend going with this company if you are planning on trekking in Nepal!!
My wife and I did the Poon Hill Circuit with Sanjib and it was fantastic. These guys set everything up and made it so easy. They are so accommodating and helpful every step of the way so if you need anything from recs in Kathmandu to gear to buy and / or rent, they’ll help you out with a smile on their face. The trek itself was guided by Sanjib and he was fantastic! He went at whatever pace we felt like we needed to go at and was always checking in to make sure we were doing well. He also takes breaks that are so perfectly spaced out for water, tea, snacks, and lunch that when we felt we were starting to get tired it was time to rest without even saying anything. The circuit itself is 5 days of trekking with some really incredible trails through villages, rivers, valleys, ridges, and mind blowing overlooks. Poon hill itself is absolutely incredible, specially if doing the longer hikes isn’t for you. We genuinely couldn’t be any happier with Sanjib and would highly recommend him and the company for your adventure needs! Thank you all!
Beautiful experience made in August 2024. Sanjib organized a 11 days tour in a few days: It included Kathmandu, Pockara and Trekking tò Poon Hill (4 Days). Sanjib really thought of everything and was Always available and attentive to details, making me feel his support at all times. The trekking tò Poon Hill was nice and i was accompained by Raj Who was very nice and Always available. We spent fun days! I strongly reccomend this group! See you soon Sanjib, Raj!
We did the four-day trekking to Poon Hill with Niraj Baniya, he adapted to our rhythm and helped us at all times with the adversities we encountered. I would repeat with him without hesitation. Thank you very much for everything.
The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is considered a moderate trek, suitable for beginners with a reasonable level of fitness. Trekking involves walking for 4–6 hours per day, climbing hills, and negotiating stone steps and uneven paths. While technical climbing is not required, endurance, stamina, and a willingness to walk long distances are essential. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition advises doing some pre-trek cardio or hiking to prepare, ensuring you enjoy the trek comfortably and experience the Himalayan views without fatigue.
The highest point of the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is Poon Hill, which stands at 3,210 meters (10,531 feet). Poon Hill is famous for offering breathtaking sunrise views over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, including Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Annapurna South. The ascent to Poon Hill is relatively short, about 45–60 minutes from Ghorepani Village, but it is moderately steep. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition ensures that trekkers have enough time to acclimatize at Ghorepani before attempting the early morning hike for sunrise.
Absolutely! The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is ideal for beginners. It does not require technical climbing skills, and the daily trekking distances are moderate, allowing first-time trekkers to enjoy the Himalayas comfortably. That said, a reasonable level of fitness is recommended to handle uphill climbs and uneven trails. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition offers guidance, preparation tips, and support during the trek, ensuring that even novices can safely experience the stunning mountain landscapes, cultural villages, and natural beauty of the Annapurna region.
Although the trek reaches a maximum altitude of 3,210 meters, altitude sickness can still occur. Proper hydration, gradual pacing, and rest are essential to reduce risk. Avoid alcohol, heavy meals before trekking, and rapid ascents. If symptoms such as headaches, nausea, or dizziness appear, stop and rest immediately. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition trains guides to recognize early signs of altitude sickness and provides support, ensuring trekkers ascend safely and enjoy the trek while minimizing health risks.
Yes, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek can easily be extended to explore nearby trails, such as Ghorepani-Tadapani-Ghorepani loop, or combined with treks to Annapurna Base Camp or Chomrong. Adding extra days allows for a slower pace, extra acclimatization, and exploration of more remote villages. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition customizes itineraries based on your preferences, physical condition, and available time, ensuring you get a tailored trekking experience that maximizes Himalayan scenery, cultural encounters, and adventure.
The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek can be done year-round, but the most favorable seasons are autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May). During these periods, the skies are generally clear, allowing for stunning panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Autumn offers moderate temperatures and stable weather after the monsoon, while spring showcases blooming rhododendron forests along the trail. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition recommends planning your trek during these months to enjoy pleasant trekking conditions and vibrant natural scenery.
While the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is well-marked and can be done independently, hiring a guide or porter is highly recommended. Guides provide local knowledge, ensure your safety, and enhance your experience with insights about the culture, flora, and fauna. Porters help carry heavy backpacks, allowing you to trek comfortably. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition provides experienced guides and porters who are familiar with the region, ensuring your trek is safe, enjoyable, and stress-free, while also supporting local communities.
Accommodation on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is primarily in tea houses or lodges, which are simple, clean, and cozy. Most lodges provide basic amenities such as a bed, blankets, and shared bathrooms, with hot showers available in some locations. Meals are typically served in a communal dining area, offering Nepali and continental options. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition selects lodges that maintain hygiene standards and provide a welcoming environment, ensuring trekkers have comfortable rest stops after each day of walking in the mountains.
Yes, a variety of food is available at tea houses and lodges along the trail. Typical meals include Dal Bhat (rice with lentils), noodles, soups, pancakes, and local snacks. Hot drinks like tea, coffee, and hot chocolate are also available to keep you warm. Meals are usually fresh and nutritious, supporting your energy levels during trekking. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition ensures that you have access to safe, wholesome meals throughout the trek, including options for vegetarians and special dietary requirements upon request.
Yes, trekking in the Annapurna region requires two permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) card. These permits are necessary for legal trekking in the region and help support conservation and local communities. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition handles the entire permit process for you, ensuring that all documentation is complete before the trek begins, so you can focus on enjoying your journey without any administrative worries.
Packing the right gear is crucial for comfort and safety. Essential items include warm clothing, trekking boots, a waterproof jacket, gloves, hat, trekking poles, sun protection, and a backpack for personal belongings. A water bottle, first-aid kit, and snacks are also recommended. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition provides detailed packing lists and can arrange rental gear if needed. Packing wisely ensures that trekkers are prepared for varying weather conditions and can fully enjoy the trek without discomfort or unnecessary weight.
