Overview

The Mardi Himal Trek, offered by Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition, is a hidden gem in Nepal’s Annapurna region. Unlike the more crowded Annapurna Base Camp or Everest Base Camp treks, Mardi Himal offers a serene, off-the-beaten-path experience for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Starting from the vibrant city of Pokhara, this trek takes you through pristine landscapes, traditional villages, and dense forests before opening up to breathtaking alpine views.

The trek passes through small villages like Dhampus, Pothana, and Siding, where trekkers can experience authentic Nepali culture, interact with local communities, and enjoy traditional hospitality. The journey transitions from terraced farmlands to lush rhododendron and oak forests, eventually leading to high-altitude meadows near the Mardi Himal Base Camp. From here, panoramic views of the Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Mardi Himal itself await.

  • Less crowded trails for a peaceful trekking experience
  • Panoramic mountain views including Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre
  • Rich cultural encounters in remote villages
  • Opportunity to explore alpine meadows and rugged landscapes

Best Season for Mardi Himal Trek

The best time to trek Mardi Himal is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. During spring, the forests and meadows are in full bloom, with vibrant rhododendron flowers creating a picturesque landscape. Autumn offers clear skies and stable weather, ideal for capturing breathtaking photographs of the Annapurna and Fishtail peaks.

While winter treks are possible, temperatures drop significantly at higher altitudes, and some trails may be covered with snow. Monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended due to heavy rainfall, slippery trails, and the risk of landslides. Choosing the right season ensures both safety and an unforgettable trekking experience.

Short Points:

  • Spring (Mar-May): Blooming flowers, moderate weather, excellent visibility
  • Autumn (Sep-Nov): Clear skies, stable weather, colorful landscapes
  • Winter: Cold, snow-covered trails, less crowded
  • Monsoon: Heavy rainfall, slippery paths, and potential hazards

Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty and Transportation

The Mardi Himal Trek is considered moderate in difficulty, making it accessible for both novice and experienced trekkers with a good level of fitness. The trek gradually ascends from Pokhara (850m) to the High Camp (3,565m) and optional Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m). Daily trekking durations vary from 4 to 6 hours, with some challenging uphill sections, especially above Low Camp.

Transportation is typically organized by Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition. Trekkers are picked up from Kathmandu and driven to Pokhara (6-7 hours). Return journeys to Kathmandu are equally comfortable by road. Private vehicles or tourist buses are used depending on group size and preference, ensuring a smooth start and end to the trek.

Key Points:

  • Moderate difficulty, suitable for trekkers with basic fitness
  • Daily trekking hours: 4–6 hours
  • Gradual altitude gain reduces risk of altitude sickness
  • Comfortable transportation from Kathmandu to Pokhara and back

Food and Accommodation for Mardi Himal Trek

During the trek, accommodation is available in teahouses and lodges along the trail. Facilities are basic but comfortable, providing warm beds, blankets, and shared bathrooms. The higher you go, amenities may become simpler, but cleanliness and hospitality remain consistent.

Meals typically consist of Nepali and international dishes, including dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, pasta, soups, and eggs. Freshly brewed tea, coffee, and hot chocolate are readily available to keep trekkers energized. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition ensures that trekkers are well-fed and comfortable throughout the journey, even in remote locations.

Short Points:

  • Teahouse and lodge accommodations
  • Basic yet comfortable facilities at higher altitudes
  • Traditional Nepali meals and international options
  • Warm beverages to combat cold mountain weather

Mardi Himal Trek Permits

Trekking in the Mardi Himal region requires the following permits, all of which are arranged by Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) – Required for entry into the Annapurna region.
  • Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card – Ensures the safety of trekkers and tracking within Nepal.

These permits support the conservation of Nepal’s natural and cultural heritage while ensuring a safe trekking environment. Carrying proper identification and following local regulations is mandatory.

Key Points:

  • ACAP and TIMS are mandatory
  • Permits arranged by trekking company
  • Supports environmental conservation and trekkers’ safety

Trip Itinerary

Welcome to Nepal, the land of the Himalayas! Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you will be warmly greeted by our team from Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition and transferred to your hotel. Take some time to rest and recover from your flight, or stroll around the bustling streets of Kathmandu to feel the local atmosphere. Overnight in Kathmandu offers you the chance to enjoy Nepalese hospitality, plan your adventure ahead, and prepare mentally for the trek into the Annapurna region.

After a hearty breakfast in Kathmandu, embark on a scenic drive to Pokhara, approximately six hours along the well-maintained highway. The route winds through lush valleys, terraced fields, and charming villages, offering occasional views of the towering Himalayan peaks. Upon arrival in Pokhara, check into your hotel and relax. If time permits, take an evening stroll around the serene Phewa Lake or visit the vibrant Lakeside area to enjoy local cuisine and handicrafts. Overnight in Pokhara provides an opportunity to rest before the trek begins.

After breakfast, drive for about 30 minutes from Pokhara to Phedi, the starting point of the Mardi Himal Trek. From here, begin a moderate hike to Deurali, passing through the scenic villages of Dhampus and Patan, small hill settlements, and lush green forests. Enjoy the fresh mountain air, the gentle sounds of nature, and glimpses of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre peaks along the way. Overnight in Deurali village provides a cozy experience with the warm hospitality of local villagers and the first real taste of Himalayan trekking life.

After breakfast, continue your journey as the trail takes you through dense rhododendron forests and bamboo groves, gradually ascending to the Forest Camp or Low Camp. Along the way, enjoy occasional views of the Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre peaks, with misty mountain valleys creating a magical atmosphere. The trek offers peaceful encounters with nature, birds, and small Himalayan wildlife. Upon reaching the camp, settle in for the night, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and prepare for the more challenging ascent ahead. Overnight in Forest Camp or Low Camp.

Today’s trek is the most rewarding as you ascend through lush rhododendron forests into alpine pastures. The trail gradually becomes steeper, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. The terrain opens up to stunning alpine meadows and prayer flags fluttering in the crisp mountain wind. High Camp is a perfect spot to relax, watch the sunset, and enjoy a warm meal while marveling at the grandeur of the Himalayas. The crisp evening air and spectacular surroundings make this a memorable night in the mountains.

Wake up early to witness the sunrise over the Annapurna range, a truly breathtaking experience. After breakfast, embark on a short hike to the Mardi Himal viewpoint, which offers unparalleled views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, and the majestic Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) peak. On clear days, the Dhaulagiri range and Annapurna Sanctuary are also visible. Spend your day exploring the surrounding area, taking photographs, and soaking in the alpine landscape. Return to High Camp in the evening to enjoy a warm meal, a serene sunset, and the peaceful Himalayan night.

After breakfast, descend through the same rhododendron forests and alpine trails, gradually making your way to the Siding Village or Low Camp. This part of the trek offers a slower pace, allowing you to enjoy the forest, mountain streams, and local flora and fauna. Arriving in Siding Village, experience the authentic rural Nepalese lifestyle, interact with villagers, and gain insight into traditional farming and culture. Spend the night in a cozy guesthouse or lodge, enjoying home-cooked meals and the tranquility of the Himalayan foothills.

Today’s trek is a gentle descent through scenic villages, terraced fields, and lush forests. Pass through Lowang and other traditional settlements, observing local life, farming practices, and Nepalese hospitality. After a short drive from the trailhead back to Pokhara, unwind by Phewa Lake or explore Lakeside’s shops and cafes. Enjoy a comfortable hotel stay, indulge in delicious meals, and reflect on the breathtaking views and experiences from your trek. Pokhara’s serene lakeside environment offers a relaxing contrast to the rugged mountain trails. Overnight in Pokhara.

After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive back to Kathmandu. The route passes through picturesque towns, terraced hillsides, and occasional Himalayan vistas, offering one last glimpse of the beautiful landscape. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and relax after the journey. Spend the evening exploring the vibrant streets, shopping for souvenirs, or enjoying a farewell dinner. Overnight in Kathmandu allows you to reflect on the adventure, share stories with fellow trekkers, and prepare for departure.

After breakfast, depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure. Take with you unforgettable memories of the Mardi Himal Trek, the breathtaking Himalayan scenery, and the warm hospitality of Nepal. Your journey with Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition concludes here, leaving you inspired by the majestic mountains and the serene landscapes of the Annapurna region. Farewell and safe travels home!

Mardi Himal trek

First I should say sanjib is awesome when I told him We need to do Mardi Himal Base camp trek he asked few questions about fitness and where we live and he promised he will take me to high camp and then we’ll see if we can make it to the upper view point! That what made me choose sanjib over other guides who directly promised me base camp instead of being real like these guys. Then we were introduced to our guide raj who was amazing and very much caring every step of the way he was with us and then comes our porter neem who we loved so much and till this day I keep on thinking about how he was! Both of them were very caring and disciplined. Sanjib was kept on checking on us and we always had the choice to choose where we gonna sleep and what we gonna eat and the always served us first then after we are done they will eat which is part of Nepali culture, they never changed it no matter how much we insist. Something i should specially mention is rajs patience no matter how slow we are no matter how many questions we as or no matter how many stupid statements we make he would never snap or show any annoyance!

Mardi Himal Viewpoint Trek

Had an excellent time on our 5 day Mardi Himal Trek. Sanjib from Nepal Planet Treks and Expedition was very responsive with communication and especially when alterations to original Trek length was changed. Our guide Mun was exceptional, nothing was a bother, even though accommodation and itinerary changes occurred due to a sick child back at home and our need to have access to WiFi. Our porter Santa was always happy and provided us with entertainment via playing guitar and singing while waiting for our dinner. Mun and Santa made our trek a wonderful experience and would definitely recommend both as well as Nepal Planet Treks

This was amazing!

Sanjib's dedication to our trek to Mardi Himal was truly exceptional. His in-depth knowledge of the region, combined with a passion for sharing insights into the Himalayan culture, enriched our journey. Beyond being a guide, Sanjib became a trusted companion, always attentive to our needs and ensuring a seamless experience. His proficiency in English fostered easy communication, allowing us to connect not only with the breathtaking landscapes but also with the stories he shared. Wonderfully planned Mardi Himal hike!!!

My partner and I hiked Mardi Himal in April 2024. Our entire trip was planned by Sanjib from our arrival to Kathmandu airport to our departure. We couldn’t be happier! Everything was smooth and enjoyable. Both hotels booked for us in Kathmandu and Pokhara had nice rooms, nice breakfast and excellent locations. During the hike, we were also booked in nice tea houses where we could comfortably rest and recharge. Sanjib picked us up from the airport and the following day accompanied us to rent and buy items we needed for the trek. Our guide and porter during the trek were awesome and took great care of us. This was our first time visiting Nepal and we can’t wait to be back. We highly recommend entrusting Sanjib with your Nepal trip planning! I knew I had picked the right person when in the planning phase I asked if we were going to see tigers for sure should we include Chitwan in our itinerary and he responded: ‘I can guarantee the tiger will see you but I don’t know about you seeing the tiger!’ 😂😂😂 Thank you Sanjib, Jiban and Ganesur! Until the next trek 😊

Mardi Himal Trek - Highly recommend

I found Sanjib on instagram. I joined private tour to mardi himal trek alone. Sanjib is so helpful from the beginning and during the trip, so that I don’t need to worry anything at all. He replied quickly and helped arranging everything, e.g. the tour, renting gears, changing flight time, arranging a driver for sightseeing in city etc. He also picked me up at airport on the first day I arrived Kathmandu, which made me feeling safe. My mountain guide Jiban is also nice and kind. He loves sharing and he told me a lot of things about mountains and Nepal. He always cares about how I feel during the trek. He helped a lot during the trek. The view during the trek was amazing! Highly recommend this trek to those who are looking for a short trek with fabulous view. I believe I will go back and try another trek later. And I will select Sanjib and his team again!

Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

The Mardi Himal Trek is considered a moderate to moderately challenging trek. It involves gradual ascents through forests, alpine meadows, and mountain ridges, with the highest point being Mardi Himal High Camp at 3,565 meters. While previous trekking experience is not required, a reasonable level of fitness is recommended for enjoying the journey fully. The trails are well-marked, but some steep sections demand stamina. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition provides experienced guides who pace the trek according to your ability, ensuring both safety and enjoyment.

The Mardi Himal Trek typically spans 9 to 11 days, depending on the route and your pace. The journey starts from Pokhara and passes through charming villages, rhododendron forests, and alpine pastures before reaching High Camp and the Mardi Himal viewpoint. The trek then descends back to Pokhara. Our itineraries at Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition are designed to balance trekking intensity with adequate rest, ensuring you can fully enjoy the Himalayan landscapes without feeling rushed.

Altitude sickness is possible on the Mardi Himal Trek, as the highest point reaches 3,565 meters at High Camp. Symptoms may include headache, nausea, and fatigue. However, the trek is designed to allow gradual acclimatization, reducing the risk. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition ensures proper pacing, regular rest days, and education about hydration and acclimatization practices. Our guides are trained to recognize symptoms early and can make adjustments, such as slower ascent or descending if necessary, to keep you safe while enjoying the trek.

Weather & Seasons

The best time to embark on the Mardi Himal Trek is during the pre-monsoon (spring) season from March to May and the post-monsoon (autumn) season from September to November. During these periods, the skies are usually clear, offering spectacular views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Spring brings colorful rhododendron forests, while autumn showcases crisp skies and stable weather. Winter treks are possible but can be cold, and the monsoon season is not recommended due to slippery trails and landslides. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition ensures your trek is planned in the safest and most visually rewarding season.

Accommodation and Food

During the Mardi Himal Trek, accommodation is mostly in tea houses or lodges along the trail. These provide basic facilities, clean bedding, and warm meals. At higher camps, the facilities may be simpler due to the remote location, but the hospitality is always welcoming. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition carefully selects reputable tea houses that ensure comfort, hygiene, and a cozy environment after a day of trekking. Staying in local lodges also gives trekkers a unique opportunity to experience Nepalese culture and hospitality firsthand.

Meals during the Mardi Himal Trek are primarily served in tea houses and lodges. Breakfast usually includes porridge, eggs, bread, or local specialties, while lunch and dinner feature soups, dal bhat (traditional rice and lentils), noodles, and occasionally Western-style dishes. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition ensures that meals are nutritious, filling, and safe, catering to both vegetarian and non-vegetarian preferences. Drinking water should be purified or bottled, and our guides advise trekkers on safe hydration practices throughout the journey.

Transportation & Flights

Yes, trekking insurance is highly recommended for the Mardi Himal Trek. While the trail is generally safe, there are risks such as slips, altitude sickness, or unexpected weather changes. Comprehensive insurance should cover medical emergencies, evacuation, and trip cancellations. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition advises all trekkers to obtain insurance before the journey to ensure peace of mind. Our guides are trained in safety procedures, but insurance adds an essential layer of security, especially in the remote areas of the Annapurna region.

Guides, Support & Safety

While it is possible to trek independently, hiring a guide and/or porter is highly recommended for safety, navigation, and convenience. A guide provides expert knowledge of the trails, weather conditions, and cultural insights. A porter can carry your heavier luggage, allowing you to trek comfortably. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition offers experienced, licensed guides and professional porters who ensure a smooth and enjoyable trekking experience, letting you focus on the stunning scenery and cultural experiences without worrying about logistics or heavy loads.

Trek Preparation and Equipment

Trekking the Mardi Himal requires layered clothing suitable for variable mountain weather. Essential items include warm jackets, fleece, trekking boots, hats, gloves, trekking poles, and a waterproof jacket. Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a good quality backpack are also necessary. Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition provides a detailed packing list and can advise on renting gear in Pokhara or Kathmandu if needed. Proper preparation ensures comfort and safety, allowing trekkers to fully enjoy the Himalayan landscapes, forest trails, and high-altitude views without unnecessary discomfort.

Permits, Costs & Booking

Booking the Mardi Himal Trek with Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition is simple and personalized. You can contact our team via our website, email, or phone, providing your preferred dates, group size, and special requests. We offer customized itineraries, competitive pricing, and professional support from planning to completion of the trek. Once booked, our team provides pre-trek advice, permit arrangements, and a complete briefing to ensure a safe, comfortable, and unforgettable Himalayan adventure.
