Helambu Trek

8 Days, Kathmandu-Kathmandu

Eight Day Beautiful adventure close to Kathmandu, Situated just north of the Kathmandu Valley is the incredibly beautiful Helambu region. Nestled just south of the Langtang Mountain Range, this short 8 day trek features some wonderful mountain scenery. Helambu is just 72 km northeast from the Kathmandu Valley, but it will seem like a world apart as you enter its valley. Here you will find the famed Gosainkunda Lake. This lake is sacred as it is said to have been created by Lord Shiva when he threw down his Trident from the heavens to save earth. The lake is of a beautiful turquoise that reflects the snowcapped peaks of the Langtang Range in its sacred waters. There is great culture as well as picturesque villages along the way. One special group of Sherpa people have settled this land centuries ago and continue to farm its terraced slopes. It is a land of Buddhism with many chhortens and stupas along the trail.

Also calling this land home are the Tamang and Yolmo people who have lived side by side and in peace with each other for hundreds of years. This is a moderately easy trek and is most enjoyable. Nights are spent in local tea houses where you will interact first-hand with the local people who will welcome you with a steaming hot cup of tea. This trek can be done any time of year, and because of its lower elevation, is often recommended during the winter months where it is usually snow-free.  The maximum elevation is Tharepati Pass (elev. 3650 m) which will afford you outstanding views of the snowcapped mountains.

If you are looking for a short trek that will offer plenty of great scenery and culture, then the Helambu Trek is an ideal one for you. It is a good trek for any level of trekking experience. For beginners it is a good place to begin while more advanced trekkers will appreciate its great scenery. Be sure to talk to your representative at Nepal Planet Treks & Expedition about doing the Helambu Trek this year.

Day by Day Itinerary

Drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal (1350m.) this takes about one hour and then you begin an uphill walk to Chisopani.

The trail continues to drop from Chisopani on a good, sometimes level trail that crosses meadows and fields. You will then descend through Pathi Bhanjyang till Gul Bhanjyang. The trail then climbs the ridge from Gul Bhanjyang to another pass at 2620m. The meadow here makes a good camping spot and is downhill to Kutumsang at 2470m, in a saddle atop the ridge. Stay overnight at lodge.

The trek continues north to the Yurin Danda ridge which affords good views of the peaks that surround you.

The trail gradually ascends through the enchanting forest enriched with beautiful rhododendron, oak and other trees. Tharepati, in fact is a great view point from where you can get a glimpse of the breathtaking snow capped mountains such as Dorje Lakpa, Gaurishankar, Langshisa, Jugal, Numbur and many others. From Tharepati the trail gradually descends through the pine and rhododendron forests with great views down into the Helambu valley and across to Jugal Himal and Numbur in the Solu Khumbu. Melamchi Gaon is surrounded by beautiful forests, which is mainly inhabited by Sherpa people with their distinctive culture. Stay overnight at lodge.

The early part of the trek descends until you cross the Melamchi stream. You then trek gently up to Tarkeghyang passing through Sherpa settlements. Tarkeghyang is a beautiful Sherpa village with one of the oldest and biggest monasteries. Tarkeghyang, also known as Helambu is named after the Helmu caste. The Sherpa people living here originally belonged to the Helmu caste. We bunk out overnight at a lodge.

This day the trail is quite easier across flat land with beautiful forests on the way. There is a beautiful village about half way to Shermathang. Shermathang is another charming Sherpa village where you can visit many ancient monasteries and can see the Jugal Himal. Stay overnight at lodge.

The trail gradually descends all the way to Melamchi Pul Bazaar through meadows and cultivated fields. On the way, you come across several old villages. This day you will be greeted by pleasant views of mountains and will get to interact with local and friendly people. Stay overnight at lodge.
